Last Sunday was a nice, lazy Sunday. You know the type: you sleep in, walk around in your jogging pants all day, hang on the sofa, read a little, listen to some music, you know; the perfect lazy Sunday.
My lazy Sunday included some doodling. I used to draw a lot when I was still in college and it felt really good to just sit down with a sketch pad and a graphite pencil, and just draw for the sake of drawing. The first few things I doodled were all rough sketches of mandalas and doilies, and there was one that I really liked and kept coming back to.
A very simple sketch but such an awesome shape. And then I started thinking; could I turn this into a doily of some kind?
Well, I tried. And even though I don’t think I succeeded admirably, it was still a fun process; I made this myself, from scratch!
I used a 2.5mm hook with some cheap crochet cotton I found in my stash. I tried blocking it after it was finished and although it definitely looks better than it did unblocked, it’s still a little wonky.
I know, a lot less colour than you are used to seeing from me! :) But I have to tell you; I’m starting to develop a new kind of respect for the old-style crochet; the thin threads, the creme colour, and the obvious hours that go into it…
I wasn’t going to blog about this ‘fail’, but when I saw it in the light of this morning I suddenly thought it was beautiful despite it’s flaws. And I really like the center with the six petals; I think that may become a nice motif for say, a shawl or a scarf, or a bolero… !
Do you ever doodle what you want to crochet?
