Welcome to a new series to the blog, in which we will travel the world! Today I’m welcoming Kendra Thornton, who will show us all the places to be (and yarn shops to visit) in her town: Chicago!
What to Do In Chicago
There are so many places to see and so many things to do when visiting Chicago. Anyone experiencing this wonderful city for the first time may even have a difficult time choosing between the city’s top museums, restaurants, shopping centers, and nightlife attractions! Whether exploring the life aquatic at The Shedd Aquarium or taking in a show at The Chicago Theatre, Chicago has it all. From one of the tallest buildings in the world to some of the top 100 restaurants in the country, this city offers an amazing experience. Although Chicago holds some of the best entertainment, cuisine, and attractions in the U.S., there are a few that are the best to experience while visiting this beautiful city. For the foodies, shopaholics, and thrill seekers here are some of my favorite places to visit in Chicago.
For The Shopaholics
When shopping for designer jeans, a cute shirt, or a cool souvenir, the “Magnificent Mile” has everything a shopaholic is looking for. The “Magnificent Mile” is literally a mile long of some of the best stores, boutiques, and shops in the world. This stretch is a shopaholics dream located on Michigan Ave. between Oak Street and the Chicago River. The Magnificent Mile truly offers one of the best shopping experiences you will find anywhere. This mile long strip is unparalleled in its magnitude, size, and offerings. Enjoy a shopping spree with as many stores in this area as you will find anywhere in the country. Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive and New York’s Fifth Avenue may be amazing, but they do not come close to this unbelievable shopping experience! Whether shopping for a luxurious bag, an extraordinary watch, or just an outfit to wear on the town; the Magnificent Mile is the place to be.
If you’re anything like me, then you are a big fan of embracing creativity! In a big city like Chicago, there is opportunity around every corner to do so. One of the ways this is possible is through the numerous yarn shops that populate the city. Knit1 on N. Lincoln Avenue is in the heart of downtown, making it easily accessible. Further, it offers great discounts, especially for its members. A yarn shop I like to frequent is Loopy Yarns, who offer classes as well as a wide range of yarn!
So grab some yarn, walk over to the park, and enjoy a favorite hobby like crocheting while soaking in the Chicago scenery!
Finding entertainment in Chicago is easier than chewing gum and blowing bubbles. There is always a show to see or event to experience. However, Navy Pier offers one of the best experiences in the city. Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, Navy Pier provides an exciting time for adults and children of all ages. Navy Pier in Chicago has a beautifully crafted Ferris wheel, modeled after the very first Ferris wheel built in 1893. When experiencing a ride on this amazing wheel, the view of the city and the water are unbelievable. When riding at night, the lights provide a warm atmosphere that is like none other. There are other rides like the wave swing and the hand-painted carousel that are enjoyable for any Pier attendee. Also, bring your kids to the incredible IMAX theater that exists on the pier now! This is an ideal location for great entertainment and a fun time for the whole family!
A Place For The Sleepyheads
After a full day of fun in the sun, a pleasant place to stay is something important to remember. When visiting Chicago, there are several hotels that offer a comfortable night’s sleep. When visiting downtown Chicago; The Marriot, The Omni, or the Hard Rock Hotel are all perfect choices for receiving a relaxing experience. When looking for an older hotel filled with Chicago’s history, visit the Drake Hotel located on 140 E. Walton Place. When visiting Chicago, there is a great hotel site called Gogobot to help find the best hotel. This site is one of the best for locating hotels throughout the area, and has a comprehensive section detailing the amenities, making it easier to determine where your family should stay.
For the Foodies
Chicago has some of the top 100 restaurants in the country that offer some of the best cuisine in the world. However, when visiting Chicago, a slice of pizza is essential to the Chicago experience. Chicago is well known for its delicious, deep dish pizza pies. This city is the creator of the deep dish pizza. Chicago started a worldwide phenomenon when Ike Sewell of Uno Chicago Grill (Pizzeria Uno) served his first slice of deep dish pizza. Although it is now thought of as a nationwide chain, Uno started the movement here in Chicago.
Chicago is an amazing city filled with some of the best restaurants, museums, and family attractions. This is a beautiful city that literally offers something for everyone. The beauty of the Chicago skyline and the atmosphere of downtown is unmatched by any other place in the world. Chicago holds some of the best entertainment, cuisine, and attractions in the world. Come visit my home city for a wonderful experience for all!
