wip: when alice fell

Hi everyone!

I started a pattern this week and I just CANNOT put it down! It is so much fun to make, and just the thought of the finished item makes me all giddy.

But first things first. The yarn! :) I got some hand dyed peacock inspired 100% single-ply merino yarn a while ago, from Raindrop Yarns on Facebook.

Much yumminess in those cakes don’t you think?

My friend Charissa from Mad Mad Me recently won ‘Best Overall Design’ in the latest Design Wars challenge with her gorgeous When Alice Fell shawl pattern. As soon as I saw the sneak peeks online, I knew I had to make it; and mine was going to become a peacock :)

This pattern is so groovy because it consists of a bunch of spiral circles. They’re really easy to make and the pattern is quick to memorise, so I had a big stack of these babies in no time! I think mine are a bit smaller than the original ones from the pattern, so I’m going to use up all this yarn and then I’ll see what interesting shapes I can make with the spirals.

But this yarn though… Oh my, it’s just so gorgeous! The colours are SO rich and are unlike anything I have ever seen before.

Are you drooling? I know I am! I’m working it up with a 5mm hook, and using a stitch marker is highly recommended. It turns making these spirals from a counting menace into a very relaxing project :)

I haven’t decided on what yarn to use to join all the spirals; any suggestions? I definitely want to use several colours, to really make this project burst with colour!

As luck would have it, in a total serendipitous moment, the pattern for this shawl is on sale in Charissa’s Craftsy shop! You can grab a copy for $2.00! I believe the offer expires after the weekend.

Are you going to make one? :)

xo,
wink

  1. I have fallen in love with the yarn you are showing! Can you tell me the exact name of the yarn and the colour number? Thanks in advance! I really like the messages that I receive from you in my mailbox. So inspiring!

  2. I would go with a lighter teint of the purple, blue or brown, or just a natural color. Always good :)

    • In the end I decided on teal, warm yellow, forest green, ochre and deep purple, to match the colours in the yarn. I think it will be awesome! :)

  4. Hello Wink! What a gorgeous yarn, such beautiful deep shades! I recently made a big shawl with Malabrigo Silky Merino in shade 416 Indiecita (s ee here: http://www.malabrigoyarn.com/sub_yarn.php?id_sub_yarn=15) and there were so many different shades in this yarn, no skein was alike (and I used 8 of them)!
Will save your friend’s etsy shop details for future use! :)

  6. Hello Wink! Thank you so much for blogging about my pattern, you are too good to me.

Also, a note on the size of the circles… They do look quite small until you put the border on them. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that they end up a good 6 inches across once you get that inner spiral going.

I cannot wait to see your finished project!

  7. I flew to the website to buy this pattern! I love your yarn choices..beautiful!
